And before we ever start touching a sample, I just want to say, I'm not the man you want to teach you about drum break samples.

Like I said a VERY basic drum pattern that is seen frequently.Įxperiment a little bit with those, place the Kicks around and get a feeling for how they will sound in different places. So x will represent the step, and we will go 2 BarsĪnd to add a simple kick drum to it you would Do a pattern like this (very basic) Understanding that most hip hop is based off a snare hit every 5th step. Some of the mainstream beats touch the mid 100's at times. Hip hop's main BPM(Beats per minute) tempo is between 85-95. Where you highlight the kicks, hi hats, snares, etc is called the step sequencer. The biggest thing for you to understand about making the beats is about the drums. I didn't touch samples until about 2 years ago mainly because I needed to figure out my style. I have limited musical knowledge as far as instruments go, but have an understanding for the patterns, the notes that sound good, and a few helpers along the way It's more of a hobby that sometimes pays off than it is a job for me. I am 6+ years into producing, have a relatively successful career thus far. FL studio offers a demo version that is great because you can use just about ALL features, but you just can't save any projects. LMMS should be fine for getting used to the patterns and the way things are set up in a basic beat. Between most producers I've ever met or collaborated with there wasn't a middle ground LOL. My friend uses Reason, and he swears up and down its the best. You will find out that producers tend to be VERY loyal to their programs. Aviary is closely related(from what I see) to Audacity. Now I looked into LMMS, and Aviary, and the sound quality as well as the configuration of everything is more on the amateur side of things. Not A problem at all Jay, thats what hip hop is all about right? Spreading love and appreciation. I'd like to make some nice sample based hip hop beats.

I'd be willing to invest in maybe the FLStudio option but I like free since its just for recreation so I'd prefer LMMS or Aviary for now. I don't know if you have any experience with any of the above two but I figure if you're making beats it doesn't really matter what beatmaker you're using, the process is pretty much the same right?

Sure I could load some drums and put some of the other stuff on it (that must sound pretty ignorant) but it doesn't come out sounding right. Thing is (and this is why I asked for help), once I have any of these open I have no idea what to do with them.

#Lmms beats plus

I have Linux Multimedia Studio on my desktop which I heard was just as good as FL Studio with the added plus that it's free (open source).Īlso I got a link to an online program called Aviary which was for something else but found that they had a nice looking beatmaker also (see the music creator button).

#Lmms beats software

I've tinkered around with a few of these software stuff but still can't do s***.

#Lmms beats how to

So with that in mind I'd like to learn how to do stuff with software only (for now). I'm serious about this but I just want to keep it recreational for now since I have no idea about this whole beat creating thing.

Will be more than willing to help once you explore these options! Very few producers have been able to make a good career off of software alone, so if/when you reach a serious point in your career, then it will be time to invest in some hardware. I like a combonation of 1 and 3 because most software has the ability to link the traditional hardware to the software. All the goodies you would find in a studio. Keyboards, MPC's, even some real instruments, 4 or 8 tracks, turntables. Set up somewhat the same as FL studio, and is free to mess around with and make some beats in a step sequencer.ģ) Hardware- This is obviously the most pricy option. You can simply do a google search and that will pop up. But there are "other ways" around that.Ģ) Online programs- I have never seriously looked into this but I know that Rockstar Games (yes, the Grand Theft Auto guys) Made something for PSP, or at least attempted to and had an online version of it called Beaterator. The downside to this is that some of these programs, as well as the software addons can be a bit pricy. I find it very easy to use and you can do just about anything with it. I prefer FL Studio, have been using it for like 6 years. Well theres a few things you can do depending on how seriously you wanna take it.ġ) Software- Reason, Logic, FL Studio, GarageBand.
